The legendary Pine River, the fastest river in Michigan with sections of class II whitewater (Dobson to Low Bridge). The Pine is a national scenic river that traverses a variety of water conditions, has many sharp bends, short choppy riffles, and passable log and debris jams. It has challenging stretches, drops approximately ten feet per mile and carves through narrow and steep sandy banks amidst remote forests. The Pine is cold year-round and has sharply curving banks.
A nice map of the Pine with access points can be found at: http://www.fishweb.com/maps/manistee/pine_river/index.html The last take out for the Pine River is Low Bridge. Low Bridge is located south of highway 55, just west of Moss Road, 1 mile from the campground.
The Pine is a DNR permit regulated river (May 15 through Sept 10). Canoe liveries supply the permit if renting. If bringing your own canoe, you must obtain a watercraft permit for $2 per watercraft from any Manistee National Forest Office. For info or permits contact the Baldwin Ranger Station at 231-745-4631. (If your plans change, please call 231-745-4631 to cancel your private watercraft permit so it may be available to others. Only 100 are issued on Saturdays.) A Recreation Fee vehicle pass is required at river access sites. A pay station with self-service fee tube is available at all locations requiring a pass. Canoe liveries provide passes to customers.
The Pine is open for canoeing from 9 am to 6 pm. Allowing anglers a chance for fishing.
Styrofoam coolers, glass bottles and balloons are prohibited. Personal items should be tied down so as to prevent loss. Please pack out all you pack in! Limit climbing of eroded banks.
