The village of Wellston was founded in 1885 by the Swigart Land Company.  It was named for Aldemer J. Wells who became its' first postmaster on June 30, 1892.  Real estate marketing companies like Michigan Land Sales, offered free vacations to Wellston around 1909 to promote their business.  With the belief that "land was wealth", many pioneers took this complimentary ride from Chicago to Wellston to settle in this area. 

 

The present 1907 buildings of the Wellston Inn were built as an apartment and office for real estate promoter, George W. Swigart.  As such, much of the land in the surrounding village of Wellston was purchased from that office in the Inn.  The Wellston Inn is the only remaining commercial business still standing from the original plat of the township of Wellston since 1908. 

 

Today Wellston includes a variety of businesses including a post office, bank, fire department, lodging facilities, a smokehouse, restaurants and stores.  It is a popular site for hunting, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, sightseeing, bird watching, hiking, camping and snowmobiling among many other recreational opportunities.  Wellston is truly a nature lover's paradise.
